o Contain islamic radicalism
o Tackle drug trafficking
· Russia feels US troop withdrawal may lead to more trafficking and insurgency in russia
· US is blamed for going soft on narcotics as it doesn’t want trouble with dissdent tribes
· US is more worried about pakistan economy and insurgency inside pakistan
o Russia however is not bothered much
o russia believes indo pakistan elations need to improve to see epace in region
o russia offered gorbhachev as mediator for indo-pakistan but they refused
· Pakistan goals in afghan are aimed at eliminating indian influence in afghanistan
