end of first past the post voting

·         Current voting system is first past the pole system

·         What is alternative voting?

o   It is a system where multiple rounds of election is held till the best candidate is pickd

o   People will have to give their preference for candidates while voting

o   The last preferred in a round is elimanted and his/her second preference votes are given to rest of candidates

§  Example:

·         Let there be 3 candidates in an election: X,Y,Z

·         In 1^st round Z gets least number of votes. Then all those people who gave 1^st preferenc to Z, their 2^nd preference votes are transferred to X and Y

o   This process goes on till one of the cnadidate wins more than 50% of votes

·         This system is used only in Fiji, australia and papua new guinea

Advantage:

·         It makes candidates work harder to earn their seats

·         Parliament will be more representative

Disadvantage

·         Complex and expensive

·         May lead to fragmented mandate thus encouraging horse trading.
