End to a misguided saga at UN

·         UN commission on human rights was restructures as UN human rights council in 2006

·         Since 1999 OIC has made UN human rights council pass a resolution  to protect religions from defamation

·         This has been done especially to protect islam from islamophobia that has been generated in west post 9/11

·         OIC has been demanding for last 12 years to incorporate it in international human rights law

·         If that is done, it might legitimise blasphemy laws

·         To avoid it UN has turned down OIC ‘s request

·         India for long has abstained i.e. refused from taking a stand on this issue

·         This year human rights council passed a resolution on “combating violence and intolerance against persons based on religion or belief”

·         Rather than legislation, education and dialogue among different religions will help in promoting tolerance
