tackling drug resistance

·         Today is world health day
o   This year’s theme is tackling increasing effects of anti microbial resistance
·         Last year we saw the rise of Newdelhi metallo beta lactamase gene wreak havoc across the world
o   It is believed to have spread from south asia to europe
·         A recap about NDM-1 gene
o   It enables gram negative bacterial strain to become resistant to carbaoenems, a powerful antibiotic
o   It has been detected in bacteria’s like E.coli, kebsiella pneumonia
o   It is carried by plasmid of a gram negative bacteria
o   It can trasfer from one bacteria to another at temp of 30 degree celsius
·         Also there have been instances where anti microbial resistant MRSA(methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus) from US, europe to south asia
CAUSES
·         Lack of hygiene and santitation has helped spread of it to larger community
·         Misuse of antibiotics
WAY AHEAD
·         Ban over the counter sale of anti biotics
·         Educate doctors of appropriate use of anti biotics
·         Put in place a surveilance system to monitor multi drug resistant diseases
o   Especially TB is effected by super bugs
o   20% of TB affected people are in India
2 people in every 3 min die coz of TB
