saving vultures

·         Action plan for vulture conservation launche din 2006 by MoEF
·         In last 15 years India has lost 99% of its vultures
·         One of the reasons is due to use of diclofenac,a pain killer, in cattles
·         It accumulates in body of cattle and when they die and vultures consume their carcass, it leads to renal failure in vultures
·         In India 9 vulture species are found of which 3 are in danger of extinction
o   Oriental white packed vulture
o   Slender billed vulture
o   Long billed vulture
WAY AHEAD
·         Government has prescribed use of meloxicam in place of diclofenac
·         Gov plans to ban use of diclofenac in veternary use
