Future of asian cities

·         in last 2 decades urban population increased by 45 mn per year
·         at this rate, atleast 20000 houses and 6 million litres of water are required to meet basic needs of a burgeoning population
·         a recent survey based on liveability index showed that none of asian cities are among the top 30

WAY AHEAD
·         indian cities are usually linear urban corridors facilitated mostly by private motorised transport
·         we need to shift towards a new city planning model. This involves
o   develop satellite towns
o   thse should be linked with efficient and affordable public transport
